A couple of nights ago I had the opportunity to see Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, which was written and directed by David Lowery. The movie stars Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster.
The plot of the movie is fairly simple… Bob Muldoon (Casey Affleck) goes to jail after robbing a bank and a shootout with the police. His pregnant girlfriend Ruth (Rooney Mara), shoots a cop during the altercation but Bob takes the fall. Sentenced to spend at least 25 years in prison Bob breaks out four years later. What follows isn’t predictable, and at a relatively short running time the movie is very tense.
Ben Foster plays Patrick, the police officer shot during the shootout. Foster really shines in this understated role. Directer David Lowery has taken a small story and really fleshed out the details.
Much of the filming reminded me of Malick and the Cohen brothers. The cinematography was impressive as well. At its heart Ain’t Them Bodies Saints is a love story, but love doesn’t change the things we have done. The overall cast is superb, and you really understand the perspective of each character.
With all the controversy about Ben Affleck being chosen to play Batman in the next movie in that series, I couldn’t help but think Casey Affleck would have been a better choice for Batman. He’s probably too young for the role, but he’s a much more versatile actor than his older brother. Ain’t Them Bodies Saints is a small movie, but a movie worth seeing.
